Chris Wilhoite to present sex therapy research in Budapest Hungary
TL;DR
Chris Wilhoite announces that she will present at the International Symposium on Sex Therapy in Budapest in May 2026. Her talk, From Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility, applies an Indigenous Hawaiian framework to psychosexual therapy. The post also describes the symposium and its theme of developing cultural sensitivity in the field.
Cultural sensitivity, competency, and humility are crucial for ethical, comprehensive, and effective psychosexual therapy. Chris’ research, viewed through a Hawaiian framework, aims to broaden psychosexual therapists’ understanding of relational, psychological, spiritual values, belief systems, and the interconnectedness of sexuality, identity, spirituality, land, tradition, and community.
Chris joins seventeen other internationally-recognized sex therapists at this year’s International Symposium on Sex Therapy (ISST). The ISST is the official annual conference of the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists (IAPST). Now in its third year, ISST continues to be a premier international forum for advancing clinical practice, research, and education in psychosexual therapy. Chris will be presenting “From Cultural Competence to Cultural Humility: Indigenous Hawaiian Wisdom in Psychosexual Therapy”.
The ISST is hosted by the School of Sex Therapy and the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists and will be held in Budapest, Hungary May 18-20, 2026.
Each year, the symposium brings together clinicians, researchers, educators, and mental health professionals from around the world for three days of intellectual exchange, clinical demonstration, and interdisciplinary collaboration. ISST provides a vital space to engage in meaningful dialogue about sexual health, therapeutic innovation, and the evolving landscape of psychosexual care across diverse populations.
The 2026 symposium will take place in the heart of Budapest, Hungary, a city known for its vibrant culture, historic beauty, and rich intellectual tradition. This year’s theme—Developing Cultural Sensitivity in Psychosexual Therapy: Global Perspectives into Diverse Therapeutic Approaches—focuses on expanding the field’s understanding of cultural context, inclusivity, and international best practices in sex therapy.
